BADIA A COLTIBUONO

The Abbey of St. Lorenzo at Coltibuono is on the dorsal mountainous of the Chianti on the slope of Valdarno. L' Abbazia vallombrosana di San Lorenzo a Coltibuono si trova sulla dorsale montuosa del Chianti sul versante valdarnese. A cinque chilometri dal Morellino, prima che la strada inizi a scendere verso Gaiole in Chianti, troveremo sulla desta il bivio che ci porta a Badia a Coltibuono. Fondata secondo la tradizione nel 1049, dalla fondazione al 1810 appartenne ai monaci Benedettini vallombrosani. Coltibuono venne sequestrata dai Francesi di Napoleone nel 1811 i quali mandarono via i monaci dal convento. Dopo la soppressione, il complesso monastico fu trasformato in villa-fattoria. La chiesa di San Lorenzo, precedente all’abbazia, è di forme romaniche ripetutamente manomesse. La possente torre campanaria merlata è duecentesca. A 628 metri di altitudine circondata da boschi di castagni, abeti e querce, Badia a Coltibuono "l'Abbazia del buon raccolto" è una delle più belle tenute chiantigiane.
